Hooray for the dark ages?
May. 11th, 2009 09:37 amI was surprised by elmyra on friday, so we went to see the Burrel collection on Saturday. The Burrel collection is full of art that Burrel found during his life time, including a lot of statues from Antiquity.
And they are all awful and painted.
Except for some of the ones that all the paint has flaked off of. Which leads me to my theory that all the classical sculptures copied Greek and Roman works that were complete arse when they were made, but fortunately, the dark ages were long enough for the paint to fall off, and they could thus inspire the Renaissance sculptures to make something decent in white marble.
I realise that I am being parochial in my art appreciation :)
