baloonworldOnce there was a young physicist, who was thinking about PhDs
He went to his Masters' project supervisor and said: "What PhDs do you have, that I might study and come closer to the physics-nature?"
His Masters' project supervisor spoke to him saying " You show aptitude for the computational modeling, and both myself and a colleague have need of a PhD student who has skill in this"
"My project is smartPET and its decedents, that are imaging technology, based on Positron Emission Tomography, it has interesting modeling and imagine reconstruction algorithm problems"
and the young physicist said "I think I could do that, and it would be interesting, and although it is much like my masters project, it is yet different. I will speak with your colleague"
And so the young physicist went to the colleague, that was also the nuclear imaging group recruitment person and spoke saying "My supervisor sent me to to you, to speak of PhDs, what manner of project would you have me do?"
And she spoke of wonders, and the physics were beyond the ken of the young physicist, for they concerned ze asymmetry term in ze liquid-drop model of the nucleus, and zere were Equations of State for nuclear matter.
And the young physicist meditated on this, thinking "If I take the task of my supervisor, I will learn much of computing techniques, and more of the physics of PET, and my work with have medical applications. And If I take the task of the nuclear imaging group, I will learn of ze liquid drop model that is beyond my ken, and I will learn to implement new simulations , and I will learn much of computational techniques, or I will fail."
And so the young physicist said to him self "If an engineer is a good engineer, and applies the physics well, he may hope to be reborn as a as a physicist when next he is bound to the wheel. And if a physicist is a good physicist, and loves the physics, and does honer to it, he may hope to be reborn as a mathematician when next he is bound to the wheel. But is a physicist is a bad physicist, and loves not the physics, but flees from it, then surely he will be reborn as a chemist."
And there was unquiet in he heart, for he thought "Perhaps I am an engineer that dreams of being a physicist"
"I will meditate on the physics of the asymmetry term of the liquid-drop model, and see if it physics that I love."

Date: 2006-04-26 07:59 am (UTC)The other question you might want to ask both yourself and your distinguished professors is what can you do in said area with a PhD - are you stuck in academia or are there practical applications outside pure research for this sort of thing.
