I'm a nuclear physicist now.

I started a PhD last week. This is the first period of having no pressing work to do, (I'm waiting for my supervisor to shuffle some data arround) and having web conection, so hi everyone. I'm scottish now.

Paisley is an astonishingly poor town, but the university has physics in it, so I'm pretty happy.

On my seconfd day here, I was told I was going to Itally for an experiment, so I get to abuse verious atoms from the 15th to the 19th (20th ?)

You utterly rule. Will you autograph some atoms for me? Hope it all goes well for you.

I like playing the following game (and variations thereof - somehow it never gets dull):

Random Cow-orker: "So Mili, what did you do at the weekend?"
Me: "I took my boyfriend up to Paisley to start his PhD."
RC: "Oh. What's he doing a PhD in?"
Me: "Nuclear physics."
RC: "..."

Yep. Great fun. Along with the:

Guy in bar: "Do you work in the ?"
Me: "No."
Guy in bar: "I'm sure I saw you there. So what do you do"
Me: "I'm a Neuroscientist."

It tends to kill conversation. Wonderful game. It's almost worth taking up taxidermy.

Heh, I like that. Are you actually planning to work as a neuroscientist?

[identity profile] almosthonest.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
Never. Gets. Old. ;-)

(See [livejournal.com profile] roadkillgerbil's response for the particular variation I'm allowed when playing that game.)

Makes me want to go do a cybernetics PhD. Cyberneticist(atron)?

[identity profile] almosthonest.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, for my sodding knee! (And maths.) I mean, look at what I've sunk to. I'm going to have to ask a GP for help, because you've slacked so badly.

Now I want to graft a mattress to Almosthonest's leg.

I thought you'd given him hooves already. Or was it crab claws?

Well done Paul. I look forward to you discovering some new particles.

Good on you! I look back on those days I spent in first year boasting about being a real life rocket scientist.. I still have that old sci-fi soc t-shirt.. but you went and did the impressive scary scientist thing for *REAL*.

Wow.

Go Paul! How long will it be before Scotland tries to deport you?

At least people will know what you mean when you say you're a nuclear physicist. When I tell non-scientists I'm a pharmaceutical scientist they usually have no idea what I mean.
