For the entertainment of [livejournal.com profile] taffeta_rose, I present tin-can based sockoolong. I will point out that he is /adorable/.

Naturally, I could not possibly hold [livejournal.com profile] marmaladecat to her foolish promise to come back to LARP for sock-based taunting, but all the same, here's SockMorrigan:

Why no, there's no connection between me never seeing anyone and making sock puppet versions of my friends. That's crazy talk.

The terrifying thing for me is that the decision that they could not supply the security workforce was made, not because of information about their logistics and training but because the olympic security board asked.

To my utter sorrow, PeteO has not signed up for the 36H. But fear not! Sock Master Tarrack will provide for all your hammering things needs.

(The urge to make sock TL characters is directly proportional to how much fun annoying them is, so Tarrack wins at this as well as at everything else).

Trigger warning: Clangers
In another place [livejournal.com profile] aralli was discussing her issues with Clangers, and while I regret her suffering, it reminded me of a rather wonderful scientific talk I went to at EasterCon (Orbital 2008). I was delighted to discover that the slides were online.

http://www.wavwebs.com/Orbital2008/Clangers/Clangers.html

It's an analysis of the orbital mechanics displayed in one of the Clanger episodes, and some speculation about the nature of the Clanger homeplanet.

A glitch in my text editor has given me the job requirement:

An understanding of Equality and Radiation physics: understanding of the interactions [of]
Diversity [and] radiation with matter.

I've resubmitted, and its time to start looking not just for postdoc positions but also for any position that will take me that isn't actually meat packing. I've decided that my new career aspiration is to never again apply for a job that wants my CV as a .doc or .txt file.

LaTeX/CV <3

EDIT: Apprently "Newcastle" means "either Norway or the middle of the north sea or possibly Australia"

"If there was one rule connected with the public service which more than any other ought to be scrupulously observed, it was this, that the salary of a public officer, more especially if he were of high rank, ought to cover all the services he might be called upon to render Any departure from this rule must be dangerous" Hansard vol 101, p138 14 August 1848 (quoted by Babbage in his autobiography).

Gladstone could totally have won the 2010 election :)

Also, it is no surprise that Babbage read Hansard, as the guy was nuts.

CloÞ-merys - mare-clothers (?contemptuous reference to blacksmiths as fashioning pieces of horse armour)

I <3 my middle English dictionary

ALSO

"craue batayl bare" is not "demand battle openly" but rather "demand naked battle". Sir Gwaine and the Grene knight is so slashable.

My new Mozilla install has swapped the positions of open in new window/open in new tab on the right-click menu. This is what I imagine switching to Dvorak feels like.
